John A. Anderson
Dr. Anderson is board-certified in both radiology and legal medicine. He is a Vanguard fellow, certified physician executive, and past member of the Board of Directors of the American College of Physician Executives. In addition, he is a fellow, past member of the Board of Governors and past president of the American College of Legal Medicine. Widely acknowledged as an expert in radiology, legal medicine, healthcare leadership, medical ethics, and the application of continuous quality improvement to health care, Dr. Anderson has written and spoken extensively on all of these subjects.
In 2011, Dr. Anderson was honored by the American College of Healthcare Executives as one of only 300 physicians in the U.S. who, over the previous 25 years, has defined physician leadership and shaped medical management. His current academic appointments include Associate Professor, Department of Community Health, Boonshoft School of Medicine, Wright State University, Dayton, OH and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry (Bioethics), Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Bethesda, MD. He held previous academic appointments at University of California, Davis; the University of Kansas, Wichita; Wayne State University; Howard University; and Golden Gate University.
Dr. Anderson completed a 30-year career as a medical officer in the United States Air Force (USAF), retiring in 1993 in the rank of colonel. In addition to numerous clinical leadership positions in radiology, he held several military command and staff posts. Among his military leadership positions, he served as commander of the second largest medical center in the United States Air Force (Wright-Patterson Medical Center) where he was a leader in the USAF Major Air Command that won the prestigious President’s Award, the federal government’s equivalent of the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award, and vice-commander of the largest Air Force medical facility (Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center). He also served as Military Consultant to the USAF Surgeon General in radiology and legal medicine.
In a career as a physician and attorney spanning more than 40 years, Dr. Anderson has held numerous positions of importance in the health care field. Currently, Dr. Anderson serves as consultant in Quality Management and Improvement for the NASA Medical Quality Programs for Occupational Health Services at their Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. A certified physician executive (CPE), Dr. Anderson has held significant leadership roles in both the civilian and military health care sectors.
His civilian positions include four years as a senior vice-president in the healthcare industry practice of Aon Consulting, where he focused on clinical and management reengineering, including providing guidance to the Veterans Administration (now the Department of Veterans Affairs) on the development and implementation of its network regional management transformation; Executive Vice President of the Morehouse School of Medicine, where he directed the establishment of the school’s first in-house strategic plan and served as the medical school’s Chief Administrative Officer; and two years as Vice President for Medical Care of HCA’s West Paces Medical Center and as Medical Director of HCA’s Healthcare Network in Atlanta, GA, where he implemented a nationally recognized multi-disciplinary continuous quality improvement initiative.
While with HCA, he was also an active member of HCA’s Quality Resources Group, training health care leaders and physicians in the application of continuous quality improvement to health care. He also served as Medical Director of the student health center at Norfolk State University. Prior to joining LawMD, Dr. Anderson served for many years as of counsel to the Law Firm of Danks, Simon and Teeuwissen of Jackson, Mississippi.
Dr. Anderson is a graduate of the University of Chicago (BS in Biological Science); Howard University College of Medicine (M.D.), where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society; and the Ventura College of Law (J.D.) in California. Born in Gary, West Virginia, Dr. Anderson was raised in Washington, D.C., where he received his primary and secondary education.
Dr. Anderson is married to Lorraine B. Anderson, Ph.D., RN, formerly of Hartford, Connecticut. He has three children from his previous marriage to the late Emilie C. Anderson, also a graduate of Howard University. His children are Dawn Renee Anderson, Melanie Anderson Davis, and Donna Michelle Anderson. Dr. Anderson also has one grandson, Joseph Alexander Lee Davis.
