Leon Aussprung
Leon Aussprung, M.D., J.D., LL.M. is both a physician and an experienced trial lawyer. Dr. Aussprung practices law in the areas of medical malpractice, catastrophic personal injury, and wrongful death. He also represents whistleblowers in health care fraud and abuse cases.
Dr. Aussprung obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1991. After medical school, he completed a residency program in pediatrics at the Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware.
Dr. Aussprung served as a board-certified pediatrician for 14 years. He earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1997 and went on to obtain an advanced legal degree in Trial Advocacy from Temple University Beasley School of Law.
Dr. Aussprung’s contributions to the medical and legal communities have received recognition from peers, past patients, and clients. He was selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers® every year between 2007 and 2015, placing him in the top five percent of lawyers practicing in Pennsylvania.
As a trial lawyer, Dr. Aussprung has litigated numerous multimillion-dollar settlements and verdicts. In 2006, he obtained a $2.7 million verdict for a Scranton family who lost a loved one due to a delayed diagnosis of a bowel perforation following elective surgery. At the time, it was the largest ever verdict in a wrongful death case in Lackawanna County.
Dr. Aussprung was also involved in the wrongful death case of Suzanne Wester Matteo, an OB/GYN physician who died from internal bleeding following infertility treatment. The case resulted in a $25 million verdict for Dr. Matteo’s husband.
Dr. Aussprung has also obtained settlements against some of the biggest medical systems in the country, including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, Allegheny General Hospital, Lehigh Valley Hospital, York Hospital, Indiana Regional Medical Center, and Lancaster General Hospital. His work and training as a pediatrician has helped him win several large verdicts and settlements in birth injury cases, including cases involving failure to monitor during labor, surgical errors, failure to treat, sepsis, and other injuries caused by medical mistakes.
Dr. Aussprung has appeared in courts throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In an Indiana County case, he obtained a large settlement for the family of an infant who died from a delayed diagnosis of meningitis. In Clearfield County, Dr. Aussprung was involved in the settlement of a case involving a child whose seizures were not properly treated and had improper IV fluid management. In Chester County, he won a settlement when a woman’s deep vein thromboses were not properly treated. In a York County case, he helped a family receive a large settlement for twin children who suffered injuries at birth and necrotizing enterocolitis.
As a clinician, Dr. Aussprung’s interests include complex pediatric health law issues. He has also lectured and published in the area of health care fraud and abuse litigation and has taught graduate level courses on health care law.
